The Kamado Family[]

Tanjuro Kamado[]

The late patriarch of the Kamado family, a humble and kind-hearted woodcutter and charcoal maker/seller. He passed away one year before the action began, but his influence remains in his surviving kids' minds and hearts.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:

  • Good Parents: He did what hge could to be a good husband to Kie and raise their kids well, even when he was slowly dying of illness.
  • Ill Boy: It's never openly said what he had. He's seen coughing and needing to stay in bed, so it's likely he had tuberculosis. It's heavily implied, however, that he may have had the Slayer Mark and since he didn't fight demons it slowly drained him of health through the years...
  • Martial Pacifist: He was freakingly strong despite his illness, but never got into needless fights and as seen with the beasr deal, he would offer apologies to his rivals.
  • Papa Wolf: At some point, Tanjiro remembers that during a snowy night, he once caught an already ill Tanjuro quietly stepping out of the family hut with his work axe in hand. Next thing Tanjiro knew, Tanjuro apologized to a freaking bear before killing it.
  • Super Strength: Since he inherited the Hinokami Kagura and mastered it, he could perform the Dance perfectly without any fatigue, and fight shockingly well when it was REALLY needed.
  • Spirit Advisor: His spirit is seen guiding Tanjuro outside of Enmu's Lotus Eater Machine in the Mugen Train arc, and much later he appears in front of Nezuko to show her the way to the Final Battle against Muzan
  • Strong Family Resemblance: A much paler and ill-looking Tanjiro.

Kie Kamado[]

The late Kamado family matriarch, who did her best to keep the fires burning after being widowed. And then she and her younger kids were killed by demons. . .

Tropes exhibited by this character include:

  • All There in the Manual: According to Word of God, Kie knew where to find the Blue Spider Lily and showed the place to Tanjiro when he was a tiny kid.
  • Good Parents: She clearly loved her kiddos and took good care of them, until the demons came to her doorstep.
  • Hard Head: Tanjiro got it from her. She's said to have knocked out a rampaging boar with one single headbutt.
  • Hot Mom: In a homely way, since she's had six kids and looks almost more like the elder sister of the family than as their mom.
  • Sorry That I'm Dying - Take Care of the Kids: Her soul tells this to Tanjiro in the first episode, before departing to Heaven with her other kids
  • Supreme Chef: Kie was a VERY skilled cook, and not only her kids loved her food but she also was pretty good at experimenting with any recipies other people gave her.
  • Spirit Advisor: She's this to Nezuko at times, helping her awaken her Blood Art to save Tanjiro. She also briefly appears when Nezuko falls victim to Power Incontinence; Tanjiro sang a lullaby that Kie used to sing to her kids while trying to calm her down, and then Nezuko saw herself on Kie's lap...
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Her two daughters resembled her in different ways.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She has the looks, the cooking / home-making skills, the kindness, the motherly behavior...

Takeo, Hanako, Shigure and Rokuta Kamado[]

The siblings that came after Tanjiro and Nezuko.

Tropes exhibited by these characters include:

  • Big Brother Worship: The four looked up a LOT to their two elder siblings. Hanako and Shigeru were very attached to Tanjiro, whereas Rokuta adored Nezuko.
  • Girly Run: Hanako
  • Kill the Cutie: Four cute kids. Their also cute mom. A demon. You know what that means.
  • Spirit Advisor: Their souls also show up once in a while to give advice to their surviving sibs. ie., in the Entertainment District arc Hanako told Tanjiro that he was overexerting himself and not fully breathing as he was fighting Daki while seriously injured and later Takeo warned an almost unconscious Tanjiro that Nezuko was losing control of herself due to Power Incontinence and asked him to save her.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Takeo, the brother that came after Nezuko, looked VERY similar to Tanjiro, whereas Hanako resembled Nezuko a bit and Shigeru would look more like Tanjiro if he didn't have his hair cropped super short.
  • The Speechless: Being a toddler, Rokuta was never heard talking before he was killed. He only speaks in the Lotus Eater Machine created by Enmu.

The Kamado Ancestors (SPOILERS)[]

Sumiyoshi and Suyako Kamado once were a young couple from the Sengoku Era, who were looking for a place to settle down. They found an abandoned home in the mountains and installed themselves there, then met the original owner of the place (Yoriichi Tsugikuni) and befriended him. Their friendship would turn to be fateful, as seen centuries later...

Tropes exhibited by this character include:

  • He Will Not Cry, So I Cry for Him: While he didn't know the extent of Yoriichi's extremely hard and painful life, Sumiyoshi did shed Tender Tears over his massive Heroic Self-Deprecation.
  • Heavy Sleeper: Suyako was the kind of person who could fall asleep anywhere and at any time, much to her beloved husband's worry.
  • Identical Stranger: Sumiyoshi looked like a younger, shorter-haired, less-battle hardened version of his mysterious friend Yoriichi
  • Imperiled By Pregnancy: Suyako was right about to give birth to her and Sumiyoshi's firstborn daughter Sumire when they got to their soon to be house... and then they were barely saved by Yoriichi from being slain by demons.
  • Instant Expert: MANY Demon Slayers tried to learn the Sun Breathing Style and could not. Sumiyoshi, however, was able to - and just from watching Yoriichi perform the moves at Suyako's request!
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Suyako once made her and Sumiyoshi's friend a life-changing request... She once saw Yoriichi training and practising his Sun Breathing moves, and was so fascinated by the beautiful swordsmanship that she asked him to perform it for her. As he did so to indulge her, Sumiyoshi memorized such techniques as much as he was able to, having a feeling that even when Yoriichi had lost hope of preserving his own legacy, he would need to do it in his name...

The Rengoku family[]

Ruka Rengoku[]

The beautiful and kind once matriarch of the Rengoku family, who died of illness some years ago.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:

  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Ruka's firm kindness shaped a good part of Kyoujuro's whole view of the world, and he even remembers her words as he's dying.
  • Ill Girl: She fell severely ill after the birth of her second son Senjuro, and died few afterwards.
  • The Lost Lenore: The only woman that Shinjuro Rengoku ever loved. Her death and learning some quite Awful Truths sent him into a spiral of heavy depression, becoming a Troubled Abuser.
  • Motherly Side Plait: How she styled her hair.
  • So Proud of You: As Kyoujuro is dying after his fateful fight with Akaza, he sees Ruka's spirit few meters away. He asks her if he did well enough in his life, and she says he did a wonderful job.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She was a graceful, beautiful, wise dark-haired woman with quite the Silk Hiding Steel.

Senjuro Rengoku[]

The soft-spoken youngest son of the Rengoku family.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:

  • Big Brother Worship: Absolutely loved and admired his older brother Kyoujuro.
  • Children Raise You - The Dutiful Son: It's heavily implied that with his mother dead, his father as a barely-functional alcoholic and his older brother often away in missions, Senjuro was stuck taking care of the Rengoku household.
  • Keigo: For a kid in his early teens, Senjuro had quite the antiquated speech patterns.
  • Nice Guy: Very sweet, docile and softspoken.
  • Vague Age: He seems to be a young teen, but it's never exactly said how old he is.

The Shinazugawa Family[]

Kyougo Shinazugawa[]

The rude, violent late patriarch of the Shinazugawa family.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:

  • Abusive Parent: He was a very rough and cruel brawler, and he'd hit or attempt to his his kids frequently. The small, usually gentle Shizu would fiercely go against him even if that meant getting hurt as well. In the flashbacks, Genya would describe him as "that ogre" or "that monster".
  • Alcoholic Parent: Genya implies in the LN's that a good part of Kyougo's bullsh*t came form him being a VERY heavy drinker.
  • Karmic Death: He made so many enemies with his terrible behavior, one of them stabbed him to death in the streets. And his kids actually felt relieved.
  • Pet the Dog: Maaaaaybe. When Sanemi is at Death's door in the Final Battle, he blocks the guy from going further into the afterlife with him and Shizu. Then, he tells Sanemi it's not his time to die yet and all but forces Sanemi to go back to life, even telling him "So Proud of You". Very understandably, Sanemi is not pleased by the "compliment" -- but he does live through..

Shizu Shinazugawa[]

Tropes exhibited by this character include:

  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Unlike her cruel husband, her two eldest sons recall her with undying affection.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In Sanemi's near-death experience, she's VERY repentant for what she did as a demon. So much, she hides in shadows and yells at him to not get close to her.
  • Posthumous Character: She died when Sanemi was a young teen and Genya was a pre-teen. More exactly, she was transformed into a demon, fell victim to demon-induced insanity and killed her younger kids; Sanemi had to fight her, then kill her in self-defense
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: A small, gentle, hardworking woman who would fearlessly shield her children from her husband's rages and worked hard to support them after she was widowed.
