GE Profile™ UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryer (2024)

Our GE Profile™ UltraFast Combo Washer and Dryer is equipped with two SmartDispense™ drawers located at the top, left side of the control panel. The top drawer consists of compartments for manual dispensing of detergent (liquid or powder), fabric softener, and bleach, as well as a compartment for dispensing liquid detergent using the SmartDispense feature. The bottom drawer is used for the dispensing of fabric softener using the SmartDispense feature.

For every wash cycle, regardless of whether or not you activate SmartDispense on the controls, the manual compartments will be used and flushed with clean water. Therefore, if you plan to use the SmartDispense detergent and/or softener options, you should not fill the detergent and/or softener manual compartments. NOTE: Powder detergents, bleach, and sanitizing rinse aids can only be dispensed manually.

SmartDispense Operation

By selecting the SmartDispense option, your detergent and/or fabric softener are automatically added to your wash load based on the load size, eliminating the need to manually add them to each load. This option is available on most wash cycles, illuminating the SmartDispense - Detergent and SmartDispense - Softener buttons. If the light is not illuminated and pressing these buttons results in a beeping tone, then SmartDispense is not allowed for the cycle that has been selected. Here are the steps for using the SmartDispense feature:

  1. Open the dispenser drawer by slowly pulling it out until it stops.
  2. Add your laundry products. Detergent, fabric softener, and bleach will need to be added directly to their respective compartments as directed below:
    • Fill the rear compartment of the top drawer (labeled SmartDispense) with up to 50 ounces of liquid detergent for SmartDispense detergent dosing. The bottom drawer is used for SmartDispense dosing of fabric softener and can store up to 32 ounces of liquid softener.
      • Use only liquid HE detergent and liquid fabric softener additives in the dispenser drawers. Never use detergent packets in the dispenser drawer because they can clog the drawer and cause leaks.
        • Laundry detergent packets can be used ONLY when added directly to the wash basket prior to loading the clothes, following the manufacturer's directions.
      • Concentrated detergents that require making a "melted paste" and water mixture could potentially clog the SmartDispense system and therefore, should not be used.
  3. Slowly close the dispenser drawer. Closing the drawer too quickly could result in the early dispensing of the detergent, bleach, or fabric softener.

SmartDispense Level Adjustments

Pressing the SmartDispense Detergent button and/or the SmartDispense Fabric Softener button on the control panel will change the amount of detergent and/or fabric softener used. Each dispenser can be set for AUTO, MORE, or LESS. This information is shown on the LCD screen. You can also check the levels of both the detergent and the fabric softener SmartDispense tanks through the Menu.

  • Amount of detergent settings:
    • AUTO is the default setting. When AUTO is selected, the Combo will dispense approximately 1.5 ounces of detergent for an 8-pound normal load. For other loads, it will adjust proportionally based on the size of the load the machine senses and the garment type.
    • If you select LESS, the amount of detergent will be reduced by 40% from the default AUTO level. This may be desired for higher-concentration detergents or if you have very soft water.
    • If you select MORE, the amount of detergent will be increased by 40% from the default AUTO level. This may be desired for heavily soiled loads.
  • If the machine determines that your detergent or fabric softener levels are empty or nearly empty, it will indicate that. It may prevent you from selecting SmartDispense as an option until the corresponding tank is refilled. The Combo can still run a cycle, but we still recommend that you add detergent in the manual detergent compartment or refill the SmartDispense tank.

Adaptive SmartDispense

The Combo has an advanced feature known as Adaptive SmartDispense. With this feature, you can scan the barcode on the detergent bottle with the SmartHQ app. Then, the washer will not only dispense the right amount based on load size, but it will also follow the detergent manufacturer's guidelines for that specific detergent.

Manual Dispensing Operation

If you prefer to manually add detergent and/or fabric softener to your wash load, use the top drawer and follow the below instructions. These instructions also cover adding bleach.

  1. Press the SmartDispense Detergent and/or Fabric Softener button on the control panel until its light turns off.
  2. Open the top dispenser drawer by slowly pulling it out until it stops.
  3. For detergent: Set the flap in the detergent compartment to the type of detergent to be used:
    • Lifting the flap up for powder detergent.
    • Keeping the flap down for liquid detergent.
  4. Add the desired amount of detergent to the compartment.
    • Tips for detergent usage:
      • Detergent usage may need to be adjusted for water temperature, water hardness, or the size and soil level of the wash load. It is important to avoid using too much detergent in your Combo as it could result in extended wash times, over-sudsing, or detergent residue on your clothes.
      • Do not fill the detergent over the MAX line.
      • Use the manufacturer's recommended amount, which is normally well below the MAX line.
  5. For fabric softener: Add the recommended amount of fabric softener into the compartment in the top dispense drawer. Remember not to exceed the MAX fill line.
    • The fabric softener compartment will be siphoned in the final rinse of the wash cycle.
    • This compartment can also be used to accommodate other liquid rinse aids such as sanitizers and fabric enhancing liquids. The use of these other products must be certified by the liquid manufacturer for safety in the use of a residential washing machine and combination washer/dryer. Please check carefully, as certain liquids may invalidate the warranty on your Combo.
  6. For bleach: If you want to use bleach, measure out the recommended amount of liquid bleach, not exceeding 1/3 cup, and pour into the compartment labeled "Liquid Bleach". It is recommended to use high-efficiency bleach in front-load washers. It is also very important to make sure not to exceed the maximum fill line because overfilling can cause early dispensing of the bleach and potentially damage your clothes. Remember, do not use powdered bleach in the dispenser drawer.
  7. After adding your laundry products, slowly close the dispenser drawer. Closing the drawer too quickly could result in the early dispensing of the detergent, bleach, or fabric softener.
    • You may see a small amount of water in the detergent, liquid bleach, and fabric softener compartments at the end of the cycle. This is part of the normal operation and is a result of the normal flushing and siphoning action.
