Nurse Practitioners have the scope and knowledge to provide family medicine to Ontarians and help fix a massive shortage of GPs. As an NP working for a private platform over 70% of patients I see, do not have a GP (NP OR FAMILY DOCTOR).It's about time to have improved integration into our health care system that allows NPs to get compensated in various funding model options.It is about time to also educate the public and improve access to our communities.Most people still do not fully understand our role.Nps work as GPsWe are autonomous We are not supervised by doctors We manage exactly the same acute and chronic conditions as family doctors. We collaborate with specialists as needed. A tale to tell: Doctor: We are doing some test and investigation on your case. Patient: Thanks doctor. (got careflight to other hospital) Nurse: So, do you need some pain relief now? Patient: Yes, please! (after 24 hours in ED) finally got admitted to the ward. phew.. Nurse: Sorry we have to put you in an isolation room because you have a closed contact to a covid+ve patient in ED (same bay area). Patient: oh my gawd, are you serious? (now patient is thinking *** I have always been exposed to covid patient at work because I am also a nurse, hmm.. and now I have to be isolated and people need to wear full PPE to provide me nursing care). Nurse: yes we have no other choice. Patient: but I have been tested negative. Nurse: oh we just following the protocol. sorry. Patient: hm.. (after 48 hours..) Nurse, is someone going to take some blood samples? otherwise how will I be discharge? Nurse: oh, the doctor didn't request any bloods. Not sure when you will discharge. Patient: (after 72 hours in the ward), (thinking*** I am occupying an iso bed, no one bother to discuss discharge plan and I am just going to sit here, and get antibiotics). Alright, I have decided waste no more time, I will self-discharge today and continue ABx at home. #patientexperience #communication #healthcareworkers #hospital Isn't it funny sometimes when we are actually on the other fence, we don't realise how poor communication has great impact on patients journey.

New Nursing Home Administrator always make sure you ask your corporation or RDO for updated contact list from everyone who is a top contact for each department. Put these contacts in your cell and on an Excel spreadsheet for easy reference. Make sure a dept contact list of CEO/DON/MD is at every Nurse station with a simple three step procedure of notification.-ID incident also access, investigate, and write report during and after calling 3rd line.-report to nurse, DON, CEO, corp task line.-report to family, rep, and MDThen make sure that all of this is documented in nurse notes and by asking and verifying on your 24 hour report.
