5 Lessons for 5 years as an RNLD providing leadership and clinical work in an Intensive Support Team:1. I used to want to "do" learning disability nursing and PBS. Now I want to create the environments that let learning disability nursing and PBS happen, with the people I support, in cultures and environments that are capable.2. Noble intentions must be met with adequate realities. "Transforming Care" continues to be a linchpin of what Intensive Support Teams deliver but to continue to deliver meaningful change in the most challenging of circ*mstances, adequate funding for our social care partners remains paramount. 3.Learning Disability Nurses (RNLDs) remain holistic to the core and increasingly valued in the landscape of service delivery. On aspiring to be where I am now, I was told it was "dead men's shoes" and several barriers were explained. I'm proud that we've taken on team members straight from qualifying who've gone on to be huge assets to the team. Value based recruitment is the way, and there's never been a better time to be an LD Nurse!4. "Experience can be making the same mistakes everyday". Neil was the brilliant healthcare support worker that imparted this wisdom whilst I was on a placement and having a difficult time being heard by "experienced" staff. I've never used "experience" as a rationale for squashing the voices and contributions of the team. All contributions are equal, different and need to be heard. Some of our best ideas have come from students! 5. Working hard in silence and letting results be your noise goes so far. I've had to be pushed to "shout" about our successes. The "near misses" and the positives aren't the ones that hit the headlines or feed into national agendas/reports. Let's keep shouting about these! I'm proud our team has delivered meaningful, objective reductions in admissions.I could go on but I wanted to capture some key takeaways about my time as an IST Advanced Nurse Practitioner. It's not easy work, but it's still the best work I've done!Keen to hear from other IST Nurses to hear your lessons. I don't see enough of ourvoices on LinkedIn!

Nursing shift handovers for patients with learning disabilities at acute hospitals are hugely varied, lack structure and are failing patients, a safety watchdog has said.It said hospitals must do more to provide effective care for people with learning disabilities as the system can cause distress and confusion for patients, and elevate the risk of harm.https://lnkd.in/eckW4Zsc #LearningDisabilities #PatientCare #SafetyWatchdog #PatientSafety #learningdisabilitynursing

Making the decision to move a loved one into a nursing home can be a difficult choice. Yet living independently can become challenging for many older people, as well as for their family members and caregivers who help care for them.Certain physical changes are expected with age and are considered normal, such as decreased balance or hearing. However, this can shift from common to concerning behavior when you begin noticing an older family member falling more often or struggling to walk up and down the stairs. This can signal the need to move from an assisted living facility to a nursing facility. In this blog post, we discuss eight indicators to consider when you are thinking of moving an aging parent to a long-term care home. The gastrointestinal system plays a pivotal role in maintaining overall health, and any disruptions or disorders in this system can lead to serious complications. In conjunction with the healthcare professionals assigned support plan, nurses and disability support staff need to be well-versed in bowel care techniques. This is to effectively address and prevent issues. Proper training equips you with the knowledge and skills required to assist in maintaining regular bowel movements, preventing constipation, and managing conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease. By providing the necessary guidance and care, healthcare professionals can significantly improve quality of life, alleviate discomfort, and reduce the risk of complications. #DisabilityAwareness #NDIS #Disability #SupportWork #Nursing #RN #InclusionMatters #DisabledAndProud #AccessibleWorld #DisabilityRights #DifferentNotLess #InvisibleDisabilities #DisabledLife #AbilityOverDisability #EmpowerDisabled#DisabilityAdvocate #BreakingBarriers #DisabilityCommunity
