With so much happening in the aged care space, we have a lot of information cross our desks each month. So we thought we’d share with our community some insights into the 3 things that particularly caught our attention for the month of July.1. THE POWER OF PLANNING AHEADWe often work with families in crisis and get great outcomes for them. But we so often see and hear from these families that they would have preferred for the outcome to be different. We love it when we get together with families and work through a process of understanding what this all means for their situation. Together, we come up with helpful action plans and map out a way through with guides and cues for different things that might be needed at different times and talk about the risks associated with each option.2.STAFFING RATIOS IN RESIDENTIAL AGED CARE. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?You may have heard in the media that there are now much tighter expectations for aged care facilities to deliver certain staffing ratios in residential care. The most significant of which is the requirement for 24/7 registered nurse (RN) coverage in all facilities and an obligation on the facilities to demonstrate how many ‘minutes of care’ a resident receives each day from different types of staff. We have always encouraged people to ask about staffing ratios when exploring different aged care facilities for their elderly loved ones. Now that information is technically even easier to see - you can check it out in the star ratings for a facility as found on the My Aged Care website. Or you can just ask the facility.3. SOME HOME CARE IN’S AND OUT’SYou probably will have noticed some ‘big’ changes this year around things you used to be able to get easily through your home care package and those same things not being allowed now.The important thing to understand is that these changes are not made by your home care provider. They are changes made by the Federal Government designed to improve the overall home care program (cough cough).Want more info or to discuss any of these points? Schedule a call via our website.

Dear Attorney Tully: My mother is 90 years old and in poor health. I want her to stay home for two reasons. She feels more comfortable at home and it is a lot less expensive than a nursing home or assisted living. How can I keep her home and how can we keep the costs down?Answer: A common misperception is that receiving care at home is less expensive than receiving care at an assisted living facility or a nursing home. While in most cases this is true, it is important to look at all of the costs including the amount of care that is necessary.Click the link in our bio for more information regarding home care, assisted living, and nursing homes.#elderlawct#eldercare #assistedliving#homecare

Who's going to reimagine the nursing home industry? (or already is?) A working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research is looking at how nursing homes potentially “tunnel” profits, i.e. move them to related parties in order to hide profits. It seems services purchased from related parties are substantially inflated with most of related party spending on real estate & management services. The paper is showing major markups that correspond to crazy hidden profits & many firms substantially understating their profitability. And notice the little slivers spent on actual therapy, nursing, and nutrition. Reading this brought tears to my eyes. My grandmother had a wonderful experience in a local care facility. It was outstanding and she really flurished.15 years later, my mom broke her hip towards the end of her long Alzheimer's journey. But we were grateful to hear she could be taken to the very same care center, right down the road from us and for which we had such fond memories. But omg...how things have changed. The place is now in disarray. Not enough help, and we were facing a bill of $9k a month! The staff, aides, therapists, and nurses themselves were still amazing- so skilled and compassionate, and doing their best 🙏 - but they were completely understaffed. As we got to be friends, they told us how the center probably needed 3x more staff, and how many were only making $15/hr. We told them how much we were paying and long story short, we ended up bringing my mom home for her last days, hiring some of the aides directly, paying them double, and paying way less for better care at home. Thanks to Health Tech Nerds for sharing this. (Their weekly email is amazing, I always read from top to bottom!)I know a lot of us are caring for elder relatives- or might be soon. What has your experience been with nursing homes? And if you're a caregiver, please take care of yourself- this stuff is hard in all the ways.#aging #wellbeing #healthtech #illness #caregivers #
